VM backups are not a nice-to-have — they are the safety net that determines whether a hardware failure, ransomware attack, or accidental misconfiguration is a minor inconvenience or a catastrophic event. Infinity Data Center's Proxmox Backup Server service provides efficient, verified, encrypted VM backups for Proxmox-based environments — both for VMs hosted at Infinity Data Center and for on-premise Proxmox deployments that need an off-site backup destination.
What Is Proxmox Backup Server?
Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) is an enterprise backup solution developed specifically for Proxmox VE environments. It integrates natively with Proxmox VE's management interface, allowing VM and container backups to be scheduled, monitored, and restored directly from the Proxmox web console. PBS stores backups as incremental chunks with content-aware deduplication, dramatically reducing storage requirements compared to traditional full-image backup approaches.
Infinity Data Center operates PBS instances as a managed service — your Proxmox VMs back up to our PBS infrastructure on your configured schedule, and our engineering team monitors backup job health and alerts on failures.
Deduplication: Efficient Storage
Proxmox Backup Server's deduplication engine stores only unique data chunks — identical blocks across multiple VMs or multiple backup generations are stored only once. For typical virtualized environments, this results in backup storage requirements that are a fraction of the total VM disk space being protected. A 1TB Proxmox environment with daily backups over 30 days might occupy only 200–400GB of backup storage rather than 30TB, depending on the rate of data change across VMs.
This efficiency makes frequent backup schedules practical without proportionally increasing storage costs — enabling aggressive RPO targets (hourly backups) that would be cost-prohibitive with traditional backup approaches.
Replication & Geographic Redundancy
PBS supports replication of backup datastores to a second PBS instance — providing geographic redundancy for VM backups. For Infinity Data Center clients, this means backups stored on our Knoxville PBS infrastructure can be replicated to a geographically separate location, ensuring VM backup data survives a facility-level event. For organizations with on-premise Proxmox environments, replicating to Infinity Data Center's PBS provides off-site backup storage without the overhead of operating your own remote backup infrastructure.
Encryption at Rest and in Transit
Proxmox Backup Server supports client-side encryption — backup data is encrypted on the source system before transmission to PBS, and the encryption keys never leave the client. This means backup data stored on PBS infrastructure is unreadable without the client's encryption key — even to Infinity Data Center's engineering staff. For organizations with data handling obligations that extend to backup storage, client-side encryption provides the strongest available protection. Backup data is also transmitted over encrypted connections, protecting data in transit.
Fast, Verified Restores
The best backup is a backup that restores successfully when needed. PBS supports instant VM restoration directly from the Proxmox VE management interface — a failed VM can be restored to a previous backup state in minutes rather than hours. PBS also supports file-level recovery from VM backups without requiring a full VM restore, allowing individual files or directories to be retrieved from a backup without spinning up the entire VM. Backup integrity is verified through PBS's built-in verification jobs, which confirm that stored backup data is intact and readable on a scheduled basis.
Shared vs. Dedicated Backup
Infinity Data Center offers Proxmox Backup Server in two configurations:
- Shared PBS — Your VMs back up to a shared PBS instance with storage allocated to your account. Most cost-effective option for moderate VM backup needs.
- Dedicated PBS — Your own dedicated PBS instance with exclusive storage and compute resources. Appropriate for large VM environments, high-frequency backup schedules, or organizations that require dedicated infrastructure for compliance or security reasons.
Both options include Microsoft 365 backup as an available add-on. Additional remote backup options via Rsync are also available. Contact us or call 866.790.4678 to discuss your VM backup requirements and get current pricing.
